Event Transportation
DO NOT RENT CARS! You'll be glad you didn't!
Here, in order, are the best ways to make your way around the 2009 World Handball Championships.
Dedicated Shuttles (aka “Option A”)
Shuttles run on two loops: the Hotel Loop through downtown Portland to and from the 2009 Host Hotels (Mark Spencer, Portland Paramount, and University Place, not necessarily in that order) to Multnomah Athletic Club; and the MAC/SAC Loop, MAC to and from Sunset Athletic Club. These shuttles will operate constantly, often as fast as twice an hour.
In keeping with the 2009 Green Event objectives, your hosts urge you to use our shuttle system and avoid navigating and parking hassles. You’ll get to know more players on our carefree shuttles, too.
Daily shuttle times will be based on match starts. Please refer to the information board at the MAC entrance for updates. In general, Hotel Loop routes will begin approximately 1 hour before the first MAC or SAC match, and the last bus of the night will depart from the MAC entrance approximately 30 minutes after the final match is finished. The last bus from the Sunset Monday-Saturday will go downtown to the hotels after a stop at the MAC; no need to load and unload yourself and your gear on the last run.
Public Transit (Option B)
Portland has excellent public transit in the central core, offered through the TriMet System (www.trimet.org). Within a block or two of the MAC entrance are bus lines and light rail trains: 2009 host hotels are accessible easily via these transit options, but the SAC would be very difficult to reach by transit, so please use Option A for the SAC.
Ask at Registration for printed riding directions to and from our three host hotels. You can ride in the city core for $19.50 for a 7-day pass. How’s that for economy? Purchase that pass at Fred Meyer, an authorized ticket outlet at 100 NW 20th Place just blocks from MAC.
Just a thought: if you try public transit as an option in addition to 2009 shuttles, please do it once to practice before racing to your match!
Driving and Parking at MAC and Sunset AC (Not really an Option …)
Why drive? We’ve taken all the headache out of your visit to Portland. If you absolutely must take your car, pick up driving directions between MAC and SAC at the Registration Desk.
Parking is very limited at the SAC and volunteers will monitor the parking lot to prevent non-members from parking. 2009 players will have access to some off-site parking on a limited basis. The MAC/SAC Loop shuttle will pass this parking lot when approaching and leaving the SAC.
Parking is allowed in the MAC garage on a limited basis, and when overflow parking is opened, you will need to pay cash ($6) to park.
