Let the Games be Green!
Our vision as hosts of the Waterford Crystal 2009 World Handball Championships is to reflect and support the progressive environmental philosophies of Oregon. We want all facets of the Championships to meet or exceed GREEN standards for eco-friendly events.
Two Free 1-Wall Frontwalls!
What we're doing:
- Loading registration materials in reusable 2009 World Handball tournament bags;
- Emphasizing bio-friendly compostable products;
- Giving every registrant a water bottle;
- Partnering with the MAC to support its GREEN efforts:
- Use of silverware and linen for meals;
- Use of compostable disposable service ware when necessary;
- Composting of all food scraps;
- Using local vendors, products and services as appropriate.
What you can do:
- Stay at our 2009 tournament hotels, which were selected for being central – no need for a car;
- Use public transportation, your feet, and our 2009 dedicated shuttle buses to get around;
- Use your water bottle! Just say “NO!!” to single-use plastic cups;
- Dispose of waste and recyclables in the appropriate receptacles, at the venues and around Portland;
- Purchase carbon offsets for your travel;
- Take your new reusable registration bag shopping and sightseeing.

In keeping with our goal of hosting the Greenest World Championships ever, 2009 would be delighted if a club or group disassembled the two 1-wall courts in the West Gym at MAC. Details of how to do this haven't been explored, but we want to put the word out to assess interest. Keep all those sturdy materials OUT of the landfill and get a great court!
